I'm happy to announce something that has been in the works for a quite a while now: a food truck rally in Appleton! This will be a monthly event over the summer months, but we only have a date and location set for the first one:
When: Thursday May 14, 4:00-8: p.m. Where: Pierce Park in Appleton Pierce Park has a fantastic new pavilion that was recently finished so there will be shelter and seating available. We are really excited for these events! Green Bay recently beat us to the punch and had a very successful food truck rally. Unfortunately, we weren't able to attend that one, but it seemed like everyone that went loved it, and we are hoping you all will be just as excited for this one! There aren't too many food trucks in the area so this will be a great opportunity for everyone to see what's out there and try some great local food! Some of the local vendors that are confirmed attending with links to their websites or Facebook pages are: Hawg Tyed BBQ (obviously), Mr. Taco, Egg Roll Plus, Tasty Wieners on Wheels, Pizza Fromage, and Kona Ice. Possibly, a few more vendors will be joining us also. This first Rally will be a little smaller but we have a great variety of delicious food. And if you guys really like it we will definitely invite more vendors and really grow this as the summer goes on! I hope to see you all there! We can't wait!

Here at the Hawg Tyed household we often find ourselves with leftover Barbeque. That is the opposite of what you'd call a "problem", but sometimes we need to get a little creative about what we do with leftovers. As you may imagine, we have a ton of ideas and recipes, and I would like to share some of them with you guys here! The first one is our BBQ Pizza. To anyone who knows me it's no secret that if there is one food that rivals my love of barbeque it is pizza, and BBQ just happens to combine those two loves! It's super easy to make which makes it perfect for a quick snack or for a last minute dinner. One of the great things about pizza is that there is really no wrong way to make it; pretty much anything you throw on it will turn out pretty tasty, but here is how we go about making our BBQ Pizza. First things first is the crust. For a quick and easy pizza my favorite crust to use is Golden Home crusts made here in Appleton by Quaker Bakery. They come in 3 packs of 12 inch crusts (pictured above) and also in 5 packs of smaller 7 inch crusts which are nice for making a variety of topped pizzas if you are cooking for some picky eaters. A BBQ pizza obviously needs some BBQ sauce. My favorite of our sauces to use on a pizza is the Sassy sauce. It has some pretty great flavors that comes out when it is baked, but it also gets a little spicier so the tangy might be better for those of you who you don't like heat. Whether you use one of our sauces or a commercial sauce, I would recommend staying away from very sweet sauces like Sweet Baby Rays. I find the sweet flavors get amplified when it's baked and are way too overpowering on pizza. If you don't have our sauce on hand a commercial sauce that I really like that also works great on pizzas is Stubb's Original Barbeque Sauce. Meat placement is important. Whether you are using pulled pork, pulled chicken, or brisket you will find that it gets dried out if you just put it on top of the cheese. Instead put it right in the sauce so it stays moist. I also like to dice up a tomato and sprinkle a little crushed red pepper at this stage for even more flavor. Finally add cheese (about 8 oz of both cheddar and mozzarella) and top with whatever veggies you like (I usually go with some red and green peppers, onions, and LOTS of mushrooms). Lightly drizzling a little more sauce on top helps keep the meat from drying out and adds a little more flavor. Then pop it in the oven at 425 for about 15-20 minutes making sure the crust is crispy and brown (it's no fun having all your toppings slipping and sliding off a limp crust), and you're done! A BBQ pizza is super quick and easy to make but it is seriously delicious. Let me know if you guys try it out and what you think!
And be warned; you can't make just one because everyone is going to want a slice. Spring is finally here and that means out with the old and in with the new. For us that translates to some new wheels. You may have already seen us out and about with our new rig. Our old red pick-up truck was good to us, and it's sad to see her go, but we needed an upgrade. Storage has always been an issue, and loading and unloading our heavy generator every day was getting old real fast. So, during last fall we found the new HAWGZILLA. An astute observer will notice that the truck and the trailer don't match too well in that picture so before winter hit we cleaned off the sides, and made plans to get new decals in the spring. We also bought a new (well, new to us) generator to power the trailer that would be mounted in the back of the truck. The generator and truck both ran like a dream in the fall so we hunkered down for a long winter ready to pump out the barbeque the moment the snow was gone. Buuuuuut things didn't go so easily. We took the truck out for her first ride of the year a few weeks before vending started and noticed that the blinker didn't work. Easy fix right? It should be; except, once the blinker was fixed the truck wouldn't start. After Denny got it running then the brakes didn't work and so on down the line...After some creative language, a lot of trial and error, and a little bit of fire, the generator and truck were finally ready for barbeque season. All that was left was to get the decals on so it looks nice and pretty pulling the trailer down the road. We still need to paint the cab black, but we are very happy with new truck. It will allow us to do larger events because of all the storage we have, and will make vending easier to manage because of the back-up supplies we can have with us. Also the new generator is completely insulated in the back of the truck so the generator noise is greatly dampened. No more loud engine noises while you eat your BBQ! I'm sure you will see the new rig out and about this summer, and we hope it will allow us to get Hawg Tyed to you all more often!
Hi everyone!
As you can see we recently had a long overdue overhaul of our website. I added some new features that will help us stay more connected and let you know what's going on with Hawg Tyed. You may have noticed on the home page we now have a calender (which is blank right now) but we will be updating with times and locations so we are easier to find. We will also be using this blog space to keep all of you Hawg Tyed faithful up to date on what's going on with the trailer. We have a lot of big things planned for this season, so we will keep you posted on all of the new exciting news. We can't wait for it to be warm again and we are ready to hit the ground running come Spring. Hope you are all as excited as we are! Matt Schmalzer |
